Market interest is high
SmartFlex® stretch hood film with at least 35 percent PCR
Stretch hood film with at least 35 percent post-consumer recyclate (PCR) – this demanding project is currently in the trial phase at customers from the chemicals, construction, and food sectors. Test runs with selected machine manufacturers in advance have already proved positive.
The background to this is the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). As of 2030, it demands a minimum content of 35 percent PCR in non-contact-sensitive applications such as stretch hood films. The regranulate that is used must have been obtained from “post-consumer waste” and can originate both from plastic recycling bins and from industry. It is important that the recycled packaging or film has already been sold and used.
Product manager Timm Strübbe points out the particular challenges: “Stretch hood films require high elasticity and are primarily sealed under tension.” This can also be achieved with PCR, but it necessitates recyclate of consistently high quality. “We use carefully selected material and have corresponding agreements with our suppliers.”
So far, at least 35 percent post-industrial recyclate (PIR) and, at the request of customers, post-consumer recyclate (PCR) have been processed in manufacturing SmartFlex®. However, the new EU regulation now explicitly demands the use of PCR. The new recipe was developed at the InnoLab in Lengerich. SmartFlex® will be produced centrally at our plant in Walce.
An important aspect of stretch hood films is load safety in accordance with EUMOS (European Safe Logistics Association), according to which many of our customers are certified. No matter whether buckets, stones, or sacks are involved, all cargo on pallets must be secured in the truck so that it cannot move. There is certainly some criticism as to whether the requirements of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation can be implemented for all applications under this aspect.
Timm Strübbe is eagerly anticipating feedback from customers. “One thing is certain: Market interest in PPWR-compliant film solutions is high.”
