Megatrends influence global developments over a period of decades. At the same time, they interact with other megatrends and other influences. Sometimes, they are then also given new names. The “neo-ecology” megatrend, for instance, has transformed into the “eco-intelligence” megatrend.

The term “neo-ecology” describes a comprehensive societal shift towards resource-efficient and sustainable management. 

This trend has recently evolved and is increasingly being dubbed “eco-intelligence.” This refers to the ability to recognize and understand ecological, economic, and social interactions and to use them oneself in creative solutions. It focuses on man as part of nature, which is intended to lead to more responsible use of resources.

This megatrend is also having a major impact on the plastic packaging industry, because it influences purchasing decisions, societal values, and corporate strategies and is leading to the reorientation of culture and economic systems.

One current example is the concept of the circular economy. Closed material cycles minimize waste and preserve resources. The prerequisite for this is functioning recycling strategies.

The EU PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) is related directly to eco-intelligence, as it aims to reduce packaging waste, increase recycling rates, and foster sustainable packaging solutions. This translates into more stringent design, material selection, and circular economy specifications for the plastic packaging industry.
