Machine operator Jens Nieweg at the new slitting machine
New slitting machine improves efficiency and quality
A state-of-the-art slitting machine has been put into operation in Lengerich. Head of the operating department Michael Walkenhorst provides an insight into the technical advances and advantages of the new machine. He has been working at Bischof+Klein for 41 years and has witnessed technological developments in the area of slitting machines over a long period of time.
Mr. Walkenhorst, why was a new machine needed?
Michael Walkenhorst: The main reasons for purchasing it were technological progress and the need to relieve our older machines. The new machine not only serves as a backup for the old Conslit 3, but also enables us to process products that could only previously be manufactured on the old machine (5610).
What can the new machine do?
Michael Walkenhorst: It can cut mono films and laminates with a width of 30 mm to 600 mm. The machine impresses with a range of technical innovations that make the production process significantly more efficient. For instance, it can automatically apply adhesive strips onto the sleeves, something that previously had to be done manually. The customer reels can now also be sealed automatically, which additionally shortens the production time.
What other advantages does it offer?
Michael Walkenhorst: The new machine ensures a shorter setup time and a higher output. It also significantly improves the cutting quality. The staff are thrilled with the machine. Its operation is almost identical to that of the Conslit 3, but is even easier and more user-friendly.
How long do training and the running-in phase take?
Michael Walkenhorst: Despite the advanced technology, the familiarization phase for the new machine is surprisingly short. One shift is sufficient for experienced employees who can already operate the Conslit 3 to get to grips with the new machine. Familiarization takes a little longer for new employees, as the intricacies of the slitter as a whole have to be mastered.
Thank you for talking to us! We wish you every success with the new machine.
