“Courage to set new goals in life”

Interview with retiring chairman Norbert Junghöfer

Norbert Junghöfer (J) has been the chairman of the “senior citizens’ community” since 2004. At the age of 87, the former head of the application technology/development department is now passing this responsibility on to a younger pair of hands. The employee magazine wanted to know how he has experienced the past 21 years with the senior citizens’ community.

Mr. Junghöfer, is it difficult for you to step down as chairman?

J: No, it's not difficult for me. I've put my heart and soul into it all these years, but age makes itself felt at some point and I have to set other priorities.

What has motivated you over this long period of time?

J: I appreciate the contact with my former colleagues and wanted to maintain it. In 2004, my predecessor Heinrich Schäperklaus (former technical head of plastics) asked me to take over from him after six years in office. I became a member of the senior citizens' community when I retired in 2003 and was delighted to do so.

Which experiences do you remember most vividly?

J: First and foremost, the weekly trips each year. I took over organizing these trips from Hans Eickholt (former head of the vehicle fleet). I enjoyed it, from the initial idea, the excursion destinations, and other program items up to and including accompanying the trip.

How are membership numbers progressing?

J: At the moment, numbers are pretty stable at 22 to 25 new members per year. We are maintaining a membership of around 320.

Has the range of events on offer changed over the years?

J: We are continuing to focus on making sure that former colleagues have opportunities to meet up. That’s very well received. Almost 150 people attended the kale dinner, for instance.

What are the tasks of the senior citizens’ community?

J: Let me quote from the articles of association from 1990: “The community regards its exclusive and irrevocable purpose as actively shaping the third phase of its members’ lives in order to give old age meaningful content, characterized by new self-confidence and the courage to set new goals in life.” This still applies today, although it would probably be formulated differently now.

What would you like to pass on to your successor?

J: May he maintain the solidarity of our community! Our senior citizens’ community is unique in the region. And I’m delighted that we've found a good successor without any problems!
